Project Overview

The original image was captured in a public indoor environment with a visually busy background, mixed lighting conditions, and multiple distracting elements competing with the subject. While the subject’s pose, outfit, and expression were strong, the setting limited the image’s suitability for professional use.

The objective of this project was to transform the photo into a refined, studio-quality portrait while preserving the subject’s natural appearance, posture, and cultural styling.

Challenges in the Original Image

The initial photograph presented several challenges:

• A cluttered commercial background with visible objects and signage

• Inconsistent lighting that affected skin tones and contrast

• Limited depth separation between the subject and background

• A non-studio environment unsuitable for premium visual presentation

Solution & Editing Process

To achieve a polished and professional result, I applied a structured Photoshop workflow:

• Precisely isolated the subject while maintaining natural edges and details

• Replaced the original environment with a warm, studio-style background

• Introduced controlled lighting and soft shadows for depth and realism

• Balanced skin tones and overall color harmony for a clean, natural look

• Enhanced clarity and sharpness without over-processing

• Integrated the subject seamlessly into the new setting for a realistic studio feel

Every adjustment was carefully executed to ensure the final image remained authentic while achieving a high-end, editorial-quality finish.

1. Open and Prepare the Image

  Shortcut: Ctrl + J

• Rename it to Working Layer

• Keep the original locked for safety (non-destructive workflow)

2. Select the Subject

Tool Options:

• Select Subject (Quick & accurate)

• Pen Tool (Maximum precision)

Settings:

• If using Select Subject → Go to Select and Mask

  • Radius: 1–2 px

  • Smooth: 5

  • Feather: 0.5 px

  • Contrast: 10–15%

  • Shift Edge: -5%

Output: Layer Mask

3. Refine Edges

• Use Refine Edge Brush Tool

• Focus on clothing edges and hands

• Avoid over-smoothing natural details

4. Remove the Original Background

• Hide or delete the background layer

• Ensure transparency is visible behind the subject

5. Add Studio Background

• Create a new layer below the subject

• Fill with a solid color or gradient

Recommended Background Colors:

• Warm beige / soft brown

• Dark neutral gray

Gradient Tool Settings:

• Type: Radial

• Opacity: 100%

• Scale: 120–150%

6. Match Subject to Background (Color & Tone)

Use Adjustment Layers clipped to the subject:
